Algeria faces growing challenges in managing its limited water resources. With new desalination plants under construction, the country is working to expand water availability while controlling energy and operational costs.
At the Beni Saf desalination plant, one of the largest in the Mediterranean, Filtralite filter media was installed in 48 filters to replace traditional sand filters. The goal was to reduce production losses, improve filtration performance, and optimise energy use.
According to Mr Mohamed Chaffi, General Manager of Benisaf Water Company, the results were clear. “Since installing Filtralite, we have increased the suspended solids limit from 25 to 40 mg/l and even maintained production at 70 mg/l. Energy use in pre-treatment has decreased by around 10%, saving thousands of dollars annually.”
Filtralite has helped the plant reduce water use for backwashing, lower operating costs, and maintain high production levels even in challenging conditions, contributing to Algeria’s sustainable water management efforts.
