Filtralite® Clean for Fixed-Bed Wastewater Treatment
In 2000, a new wastewater treatment plant was commissioned in the city of Dalian, China, to treat domestic wastewater for 432,000 residents — equivalent to 120,000 m³ per day.
To meet the treatment requirements, a biological fixed-bed solution was selected. The water first undergoes pre-treatment, including screening and grit and grease removal, followed by primary sedimentation in four tanks equipped with lamellar settlers.
Two-Step Biofiltration with Filtralite®
The biological treatment process is divided into two stages. In the first stage, 12 BIOFOR® filters remove organic matter and suspended solids. These filters use Filtralite® Clean HR 3–6, a round expanded clay aggregate that serves as a highly effective biofilm carrier.
In the second stage, nitrification takes place in another set of 12 BIOFOR® filters with the same surface area. These filters use Filtralite® Clean HC 2.5–5 as the filtration media. In both stages, process air is supplied by blowers to support biological activity.
Approximately 40% of the treated water is disinfected with chlorine and reused as recycled water for industrial purposes, contributing to sustainable water resource management.
