Air purification at Novozymes Fermentation unit in Kalundborg (DK)

“After 5 years of operation, the filter material remains an effective and stable solution in the biological air purification process for the production facilities in Kalundborg.”

A new filter media for the air purification system

The filter material previously used by Novozymes posed several challenges: it was difficult to wet evenly, required high power consumption for the ventilation system, and caused a relatively large pressure drop. As a result, the air purification filter became a limiting factor for production.

In 2005, specialist Anders P. Jensen from Novozymes began exploring the filter media market in search of a more suitable solution for cleaning process air at their Kalundborg plant. He discovered that Filtralite® Air was already being used as a filter material for air purification at Daka a.m.b.a. facilities in both Randers and Hedensted (Denmark).

As a result, Novozymes decided to replace its previous filter material with Filtralite® Air 4–10. This robust product, thanks to its well-sorted grain size, provides a relatively low pressure drop and offers a large surface area of 580 m²/m³.

Quick and easy implementation with significant savings

The new Filtralite® Air 4–10 filter bed was seeded with a portion of the old filter material to ensure the transfer of air-purifying bacteria and to accelerate the start-up of the biological air purification process.

In the months following the commissioning of the new filter material, the following results were observed:

  • Low and stable pressure loss
  • More uniform moisture distribution in the filter media
  • Improved air purification efficiency
  • Increased treatment capacity
  • Monthly energy savings of 100,000 kWh
  • Successful replacement
  • Highly cost-effective investment

After five years of operation, the Filtralite® Air 4–10 filter media continues to perform as an effective and stable solution for biological air purification at Novozymes’ Kalundborg production facilities.

During installation, approximately 350 m³ of Filtralite® Air 4–10 was blown into the application site using standard blower equipment mounted on blowing trucks — a fast and efficient delivery method with a capacity of about 1 m³ per minute.
